Program Schedule

Program schedules will vary by schedule, city and program, but here is a basic overview of our one-month program.  Other programs follow a similar schedule but over a different time frame.  You can also click on the images below for past month-long volunteer opportunities by program.

Week 1: Airport Pickup and Orientation
Volunteers arriving on the recommended dates will be met in Lima in the airport lobby by a member of Vive Peru staff, where they will be transferred to a hostel in Lima.  Volunteers generally stay in Lima for 1-2 days depending on their flight arrival time.  Meals are covered in Lima during the program dates.

During this time, there are no planned activities until the final day in Lima, where we will have a brief orientation meeting.  Volunteers are free to explore Lima, get in touch with family members and rest while the rest of the group arrives.  Recommended airport arrival dates can be found in the volunteer handbook.

After all volunteers arrive, they will take an overnight bus to Trujillo (9 hours).  The morning of arrival to Trujillo, volunteers will be installed in their homestays or a hotel (if they will be volunteering in Otuzco or Pacasmayo).  All program participants will participate in an orientation program, whose length will differ according to the program length (for the one-month program, the orientation lasts 5 days).  After orientation, volunteers in Otuzco and Pacasmayo will travel to their sites to meet their host families.

Weeks 2-4: Volunteer Work
Volunteers' schedules are divided up into morning and afternoon, as they will eat with their homestays for lunch, which is the custom in Peru, as this is the largest and most important meal of the day.

In the mornings, volunteers will work at one of our partner sites (clinic, health post, hospital, school, girl's home, etc.) from approximately 8am-12pm.  They will work with another volunteer and Peruvian staff at that worksite (not directly employed by Vive Peru).

In the afternoons, volunteers' schedules will vary a bit, but generally they will be occupied from 3-7pm with various activities.  This includes medical class (Clinical Medicine) or planning sessions (Social Work, Teach English/Music), community workshops, and planning sessions for community workshops.

Weekends are free for travel (optional).  Our staff can help orient you regarding costs, sites and safe transportation options.

Program Evaluation and Departure
On the last day of the program, all volunteers will meet up again in Lima for a debriefing and evaluation meeting.  From here, all volunteers will take an overnight bus to Lima and arrive at the hostel in Lima.  Vive Peru staff will coordinate transportation to the airport from the hostel for all volunteers.  Fly-out dates can be found in the volunteer handbook.

For those who are traveling to Machu Picchu (optional), you will have one day in Lima before traveling to Cusco.
